Hundreds of Species

Over 13 500 trees on-site

Inaugurated in 1855, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery plays an important role in preserving national memory, a role recognized by its designation as a National Historic Site of Canada. Located in a natural setting within the Mount Royal heritage site, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery has more than 13,500 trees, including seven rare or remarkable specimens recognized by the City of Montreal on Mount Royal, including:

  • Silver maple
  • Gleditsia
  • Red ash
  • Japanese yew
  • Trembling poplar
  • European black pine

The arboretum is strongly inspired by a Laurentian mixed forest with a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees such as birch, maple, oak, and pine. Currently, nearly 6,000 trees are listed and identified for the public on the property, adorning the trails and intertwining among the rest areas. The five most inventoried tree species are:

  • Silver maple
  • Norway maple
  • Sugar maple
  • Horse chestnut
  • Red oak

Our property also features four wooded areas totaling over 10 acres, two of which are considered natural areas protected by the municipality. As our reforestation and planting efforts intensify, we look forward to formally identifying additional trees on our site that can be added to our publicly accessible inventory. Our dedicated landscaping and tree maintenance team continues to manage the cemetery's landscape and arboretum while preserving the natural environments on site to facilitate tree regeneration on our property.

ArbNet is a community and network that we believe can support our benchmarking efforts within the arboretum community so that we can deepen our knowledge and skills with the goal of preserving the site's natural heritage while supporting its ecological importance on Mount
Royal.
